Christmas is approaching... kind of

When you work in the wholesale industry there is a tendency to get excited about Christmas a little early.. the organised retailers start buying in August. So I am aware it may be a little preemptive for Christmas related posts, but I am determined to be prepared this year!

I can't tell you enough just how much I love these Christmas decorations and wreaths by Candy Stripe Cloud (available soon). I can't have a tree because my pet monster (disguised as a cat) destroys them - first he will try to perch himself in it like a squirrel (he is a main coon - BIG cat) and then he will eat it. So trees are out. But I would love to have these hanging all around! I'm not sure I can make a decision on which wreath I like best - so I will just have to get them both! ^_^

How clever is this WA husband-and-wife duo?! They decorated a dollhouse for daughters third birthday - what a lucky little girl! After having no luck with finding a suitable wallpaper they stumbled across our wrapping paper at My Hawthorn's Paper Fusion; it turned out to be the perfect scale for this little bunny house (the gorgeous bunnies, by the way, are from Danish designer Maileg). Their 6 year old son helped with painting the furniture. Too cute for words!

Hattie Petite Handmade Hats, as the name suggests, are darling statement pieces to wear in your hair; each one-of-a-kind piece is hand made using vintage fabric and embellishments.

Hattie began when Rach (the very talented lady behind Hattie) needed a head piece to complete an outfit for a wedding. After no luck finding what she needed in traditional shops, she decided to create a custom piece to match her vintage dress. Rach fell in love with the process of scouring op shops for fabric and final touches, and Hattie Petite Handmade Hats was created.

Rach is happy to work with you to design custom pieces (as she did for the fascinator I wore at my wedding).

I promised to have photos from the Wrapping Paper workshop we hosted for the '30 Days of Home, Good & Wine' expo in April. But we lost our CV Card reader, so we couldn't load the photos we took. Good news, we found it this week! Hurray! So now I have photos to share. 'Better late than never' as they say.

Me and Peta had a wonderful time flying down to Sydney for the day and participating in the expo. I got star struck when I walked past Don Burke from Burke's Backyard. I watched the TV show growing up as a child so it was pretty surreal to see him in the flesh.

Our class was so much fun! I admit I was extremely nervous! But once the class started the nerves went away I had a wonderful time. We had a full class with no spare seats. (We were over the moon!) I would like to thank everyone who attended the class. You all made me and Peta feel at ease and so encouraged. We were blown away with the positive feedback!

Our Stokers Siding store is closing...

We recently made the sad decision to close our lovely shop in Stokers Siding, Northern NSW. With all the craziness of Mae we just didn't have the time to make this little store all it could be, something we could be really proud of.

The good news is, Moo Moo Stitches will be taking over the space, selling fabrics, quilting supplies and running sewing classes.

This weekend will be the little shopfronts last - feel free to drop by for a bargain (40% off shop stock and 15% off our wall decals) and some cake, to celebrate our birthday and moving forward!

We will be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 10am-4pm.

vegan lemon cheesecake

I have been wanting to cut down my sugar intake for a while now, but it makes it hard not only that I enjoy baking so much but that I am thoroughly addicted to the stuff.

So I set out to make a sugar free cheesecake - I've used agave as a sweetener, and while I'm aware that (contrary to the claims on the label) it may not actually be much better for me than cane sugar, agave is sweeter which means I can use about two thirds less than if I were using sugar to get the same level of sweetness. So I get points for that, right? The result was pretty freaking delicious.. I may have eaten it with/for every meal until it was gone..

BASE

Biscuits (recipe from here)
- 2 cups flour
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 Tbsp nuttelex (vegan margarine)
- 3/4 cup soy milk
- 1 tsp vanilla

Base
- Biscuits from below recipe
- 1/3-1/2 cup nuttelex

Pre-heat the oven to 230 C (450 F)

Mix dry ingredients into a bowl.
Mix the nuttelex into the dry ingredients, using a fork or your fingers.
Add the soy milk and mix with a wooden spoon until you have dough. You may need to add a little more flour if it is too sticky.
Roll into balls just a bit smaller than a golf ball. Press flat (about 1cm thick) onto a baking sheet.
Bake for 12-15 mins, remove from oven and turn oven down to 175 C (350 F)
While still warm, put jam on two or three of the biscuits and eat.
When the biscuits have cooled, crush in a food processor. Blend in just enough nuttelex until the mixture holds together when pressed between your fingers.
Press into a springform pan or pie dish and bake for 10 mins at 175 C (350 F)

FILLING (recipe from here)

- 3 cups cashews (soaked overnight)
- 1 cup almond flour or meal
- 2/3 cup lemon juice
- zest of 1 lemon
- 1/3 cup agave
- 2/3 cup coconut oil
- 1 tsp vanilla

Put all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth.
Pour the mixture onto the base and refrigerate until topping is ready.

LEMON TOPPING (recipe adapted from here)

- 1/2 cup agave
- 1/2 cup soy milk
- 1/2 cup orange juice (for color)
- 6 Tbsp cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp salt

- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- zest of 1 lemon
- 1 Tbsp nuttelex (vegan margarine)
- 1 tsp vanilla

Whisk together first 5 ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until mixture has thickened and is translucent.
Whisk in last 4 ingredients and remove from heat. Cool for 5 mins and pour over cheesecake. Refrigerate overnight.

The Wildian Collection

I did a speech last year at the college I graduated from a Diploma of Graphic Design. Everyone was so lovely and made me feel at ease. One of the graduating students of last year (Simone Gonzalez Toro) has produced some lovely laser cut cards. The cards are printed with non-toxic water-based inks on EcoStar FSC certified paper which is made Carbon Neutral and manufactured from 100% post-consumer fibre in a process chlorine free environment. The Wildian Collection is dedicated to issues of sustainability, wildlife preservation and supporting local industry.

New York... need I say more? Those of you that have been there will be nodding your heads in agreeance... for those that have not - believeme when they say it is a special place unlike no other. Although it was a business trip, all work and no play - well, who can deny that there is always play in my work? Especially when I have two little girls to shop for..

While I was in New York this time I managed to call into a few stores who have our decals and I have to share this one with you.. 'My Little Sunshine' located on 177 9th Ave New York City (Chelsea). It is an adorable store with the most amazing collection of delights for the little ones! Make sure you say hi to Tara and Rob if they are there... no doubt you will agree with me that they are as beautiful as their store.

Over Christmas and New Years I had a holiday in the States with 5 other girl friends. It was a trip of a life time! We travelled to Hollywood, Vegas and finished in New York City.

We experience some out of the normal weather like non stop rain in LA and a snow blizzard in NYC on boxing day. Here are some photos of my experience.

I could spend forever trawling through Prya's collection of vintage and antiques and never get bored. Vintage Soul is how you would imagine your grandmother's attic if she hadn't hocked all her stuff and moved into a modern apartment on the canal (or was that just mine?). Other things to do around Stokers Siding

Stokers Siding is a tiny little village in Northern NSW, located between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, just 8km south of Murwillumbah. Make a day trip out of it and have lunch at one of the many great little cafés in Murwillumbah (I love New Leaf and Sugar Beat) or Uki. The drive to Uki is lovely, and only 15 minutes from Stokers. If it's scenery you're after, Mt Warning and the drive there is where you'll find it. You don't have to climb Mt Warning to enjoy the atmosphere, though I've heard the view from the top is breathtaking.

The Tweed River Art Gallery is worth a visit to see some interesting local and international works, enjoy lunch and panoramic views of the Tweed Valley. Open Wed-Sun.

Isn't this just the prettiest shop? I would love to travel to New Zealand one day, and visiting The Yellow Brick Road in Auckland will be high on my to-do list when I am there. I simply must own that cat plate.. and those vintage paper dolls are to die for! You can also shop online and keep up to date with new products via their blog.
